Each thank-you is significant in its own way.

Anyone who has visited the office of Jerzy Sarosiek, M.D., Ph.D., AGAF, FACG, knows he and his wife Irene Sarosiek, M.D., FACG, value the words of Texas Tech Health El Paso students, who have taken their time to write the couple a thank-you note.

Since 2015, the research leaders have contributed to the President’s Excellence Fund, Foster School of Medicine White Coat Initiative, Breast Cancer Screening Fund, Research Fund and Fox Cancer Center Patient Fund. The duo are champions of many campus causes, ready to give where they can make a difference.

“It plants the seed of great resolve in our students and that leads to great crops of graduates every fall and spring,” Dr. Jerzy Sarosiek said. “The empowerment of giving is a never ending story.”

He added that he has been impressed each year of how the various Employee Giving Campaign funds have helped students and focused on research.

“It’s about the students,” Dr. Jerzy Sarosiek said. “For example a white coat boosts a student’s happiness and enthusiasm to complete their degree and go on to treat diseases in our community.”

Dr. Irene Sarosiek said when their family moved from Poland to the United States, they had limited financial resources as they were re-establishing themselves in a new country. At the time they saved what they could to send their children to college.

Today, both are proud Borderplex health care leaders and their children are adults. So, Dr. Irene Sarosiek said, it was natural to start helping others.

“When we came here from Poland, our children were the ones who were supported by our community. Now it’s our turn to give to our community’s children as they journey through medical school,” she said. “We want to help shape the future and the most important place to start is with students. I can’t image a better reason to spend your money.”

The Sarosieks say giving is its own reward, but while the thank-you notes are not necessary, they do bring smiles and even tears to their eyes.

“To hear their stories and know how happy our giving has made them is very special,” said Dr. Irene Sarosiek. “It’s an extremely nice gesture and we love to read the notes and keep them. Each one is special.”

Each month we will be featuring a Texas Tech Health El Paso employee who contributes to the university’s Employee Giving Campaign. Giving is just one way for our community to contribute to the university’s mission to serve all people through exemplary patient care, education and research.
