TTUHSC El Paso Vice President Joins Prestigious Texas Lyceum Board of Directors
A Texas-based nonprofit tasked with developing the state’s next generation of top leaders has chosen a Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso vice president to join its ranks.

Andrea Tawney, Ph.D., vice president of the Office of Institutional Advancement, has been selected to the class of 2022 board of directors of the Texas Lyceum. The Texas Lyceum was established in 1980 to identify talented young leaders in Texas and provide a civil, constructive forum for responses to issues faced by the state. Notable past Lyceum alumni include President George W. Bush and numerous Texans who have been elected to crucial positions, such as governor and to Congress.
Each year through a highly competitive process, the Lyceum selects new directors to serve two three-year terms on its 96-member board. Dr. Tawney was one of 16 directors chosen for the class of 2022 and the only one from the El Paso area, due to the role she plays in leading impactful community change and growing the partnerships and resources that advance the future of health care.
“It’s an honor to serve alongside current board members and those who have paved the way to improve our communities across Texas and especially our Borderland,” Dr. Tawney said. “I look forward to growing partnerships and learning from leaders across a variety of sectors.”
The Lyceum strives to tackle key issues facing Texas by way of discussions, conferences and cultivating future leaders through university-level scholarship and fellowship programs. Dr. Tawney’s inclusion ensures that TTUHSC El Paso and the Borderland will have a champion on the board who can voice the needs and concerns of the community.
According to the Texas Lyceum website, “the Lyceum concept suggests that for Texas to survive and prosper, we must develop an agenda and mobilize the will of her citizens to carry it through. To do so, Texans must be educated as to the choices they face in nonpartisan and nonpolitical forums of depth and integrity that involve all of the state’s institutions, both public and private.”
As vice president of the Office of Institutional Advancement, Dr. Tawney oversees fundraising operations and marketing and communications for TTUHSC El Paso and Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso. She is a U.S. Air Force veteran and has worked in higher education for 18 years. Dr. Tawney earned a Ph.D. in higher education studies from Texas Tech University, with a focus on the predictors of academic success for first-generation college students.
“As a former chairman and president of the Texas Lyceum, we’re thrilled to have Andrea Tawney join our 2022 class of directors,” said Lyceum board alumnus Renard U. Johnson, a fellow El Pasoan and owner of Management and Engineering Technologies International Inc. (METI). “She will now be part of 96 leaders from across the great state of Texas and the only director selected to represent El Paso for this year’s class.”
TTUHSC El Paso is the only health sciences center on the U.S.-Mexico border and serves 108 counties in West Texas that have been historically underserved. It is one of only two health sciences centers in the nation designated as Title V Hispanic-Serving Institutions, preparing the next generation of health care heroes, 48% of whom identify as Hispanic.
