14th Annual Research Symposium Focuses on Health in the Borderplex
TTUHSC El Paso students and faculty present projects and attend presentation led by NIH researcher
This spring, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso faculty and students took part in the university’s 14th annual Research Symposium, presenting projects related to health in the Borderplex and community-based interventions. The symposium was a three-day event, taking place April 19-21.
Every year, the Research Symposium highlights research undertaken by faculty and students at TTUHSC El Paso. The Research Symposium also prepares students for the next steps in their careers by exposing them to novel techniques, the needs of the community, and facets of research critical for their development in biomedical sciences.
This year’s symposium brought in experts in the field who gave keynote presentations focusing on community engagement and outreach.
One of the keynote speakers included Marisela Morales, Ph.D., a senior investigator with the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Morales has made a significant impact in the field of neuroscience and spoke to faculty and students about her work studying the neurobiology of addiction.
Additional keynote speakers included health care professionals from the University of New Mexico, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock. Their presentations focused on their fields of expertise, and discussed the importance of engaging and listening to the region’s predominantly Hispanic population to improve their health care.
