Katlyn Arndt

Hunt School of Dental Medicine Student Profile: Katlyn Arndt

"I’m so blessed to be at the Hunt School of Dental Medicine. This was my dream school, and as a student in the inaugural class, I’ll be part of something that paves the way for so many others."

Tell us a little about your background. Where did you grow up? Where did you go to school?

My name is Katlyn Arndt, but most people call me Katie. I grew up in Griffith, Indiana, and I attended Indiana University. I studied Spanish with a concentration in linguistics and completed all my dental school prerequisites.

Who or what moment inspired you to go into dentistry?

I was a dental patient when my dentist recommended investigating dentistry. We were talking, and I shared that I was pre-med at the time. I think he could tell I wasn't entirely sold on that path. A week later, he allowed me to shadow him, and I knew that dentistry was what I wanted to do on the very first day.

What aspects of the unique curriculum are you most looking forward to?

One of the best things about our curriculum is how quickly we get into the clinic. With the early exposure to clinic time, we will come out of dental school more prepared, confident and equipped to treat our patients.

Why is the Hunt School of Dental Medicine the best place for you?

I chose the Hunt School of Dental Medicine because it incorporates so many things I’m already passionate about. Specifically, I knew I wanted to attend a school that would encourage me to speak Spanish and a school that would prioritize giving back to the community. The Hunt School of Dental Medicine does both those things.

Have you received any life-changing support you would like to mention?

I received the National Health Service Corps Scholarship, a four-year scholarship. After school, I’ll have the opportunity to work in a Federally Qualified Health Care Center, and my goal is to stay and do that in El Paso.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to those aspiring to go into dentistry?

I got to where I am because I had people in my corner who were rooting for me and sacrificed their time and energy to help me. Find people like that, and then be that person for someone else.

What are your interests and hobbies?

I really love plants and tattoos! I have a lot of both, and I believe they both have their own way of bringing life to a blank canvas.

What challenges have made you who you are?

I've worked since I was 12 years old, and college was no exception to that. I worked two or three jobs while attending classes full time as a college student. While at times it was difficult, I’m so grateful for those experiences. Because of those years of working and juggling school, I’m now very organized and work best under pressure, which is fitting for dental school.
