New Track Launch
Announcing the New Global Health Distinction Track at the Texas Tech Health El Paso Foster School of Medicine
The Office of Global Health and Societies (OGHS) is proud to announce the launch of the Global Health Distinction Track at the Foster School of Medicine. This new initiative, sponsored by the Department of Pediatrics and supported by OGHS, provides medical students with a structured, in-depth program focused on health care delivery in resource-limited settings, public health challenges and cultural competency. This track aims to develop future physicians with a strong foundation in global health principles and practice.
Distinction Overview
The distinction track integrates didactic learning, hands-on clinical experience, research, and service-learning opportunities to enhance students’ understanding of global health. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and advocacy to improve health care access worldwide.
Eligibility and Acceptance
Open to all medical students in good academic standing with a demonstrated interest in global health.
Application deadline: April 25, 2025, for MS1 students.
Competitive selection process based on academic performance, relevant experience, and commitment to global health.
Curriculum Highlights
MS1 Summer Break: Six-week intensive training including fieldwork, public health interventions, and hands-on patient care.
MS2 Year: Expansion into project-based learning and clinical service with local clinics and organizations such as Doctors of the World, Annunciation House and Siguiendo Pasos de Jesus (SPJ).
Research Component (MS1-MS4): Development and presentation of a global health research project, with an expectation of dissemination through conferences or publications.
MS4 Elective: A required two- to four-week international or domestic global health elective with approved organizations such as Floating Doctors, IMA Helps Ecuador, Child Family Health International (CFHI) and Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC).
Recognition and Completion
Students who successfully fulfill all program requirements, including coursework, research, and clinical experiences, will be awarded the Distinction in Global Health upon graduation. This will be formally recognized on the student’s diploma and transcript, highlighting their specialized expertise in global health.
Graduates of this program will be well-equipped with a strong foundation to further their education in global health, advocate for underserved populations, and drive meaningful change in health care systems worldwide.
